Course Overview

Aims

The course ensures that those designated as Fire Wardens, Fire Watch, Safety Wardens and Emergency Team Members (ETM) in workplaces understand their roles in an emergency or fire related incident and fulfil the routine/daily responsibilities of Fire Officers in a competent manner. To prepare participants to discharge the of role of Fire/Emergency Response Team Leader by developing both knowledge and practical skills.

Background

The risk of injury, loss of life and devastation of large amount of valuable property can be substantially reduced if occupiers of buildings and other industrial facilities know necessary precautions to be taken to prevent fire from starting or if it has started, to safely evacuate from a property or facility or to extinguish it at the incipient stage and prevent it from spreading. 

This course will focus on fire prevention, fire protection, fire evacuation and fire emergency response. It will demonstrate the use of fire suite, breathing apparatus, and the application of common firefighting equipment like: portable and mobile fire extinguishers, fire buckets, fire blankets, fire detectors, fire hose reel, fire hydrants, fire panel, water sprinkler system and FM 200 system. It will teach participants the process of preventing, detecting, suppressing and extinguishing fires and how to protect people and property to assure the continuity of operations of a facility. 

It will cover duly-recognized problem areas in fire emergency response. You will also understand how to network with the Federal Fire Service, state fire services, other fire and emergency services providers, in the event of a fire emergency. It is a must for every organization concerned with fire safety.

Outcomes

On completion of this training session, each participant will: 

  • To define Fire and describe and identify the components of the fire triangle and fire tetrahedron
  • To describe the three physical states of fuel and explain the fuel conversion process of solids and liquids
  • To define flashpoint, specific gravity, vapor density and explosive range and describe the general characteristics of hydrocarbon fuels
  • To identify heat generation sources and define classes of fire and fuel for each
  • To describe the principle of fire extinguishments and an incipient fire
  • To discuss causes of fire, prevention techniques and fire risk management and list five common fire extinguishing agents
  • To explain the primary method of fire extinguishments by Water, CO2, DCP, Foam and Dry Powder and list two fire extinguishing agents for each class of fire
  • To identify the classification of a given fire extinguisher and the appropriate fire extinguisher for a given class of fire
  • To describe the operation of the following extinguishers: self expelling, cartridge operated, stored pressure and define and explain the meaning of PASS
  • To explain how to response appropriately to a given emergency, explain how to notify appropriate authorities to a given emergency, explain how to identify an exposure limit and explain how to determine if the fire is beyond the incipient stage
  • To explain the limitations of wearing normal work clothing while fighting a fire and demonstrate the Fire Fighting Scenario and Practical Evolution
  • To list selected reasons for fire spread and identify corresponding actions to minimize fire spread and demonstrate correct selection and proper usage of portable firefighting equipment when given selected fire condition(s) in controlled situation(s)
  • The participant will be able to give an explanation of the following, to the satisfaction of his/her Supervisor, within one week of returning to the work-site:
    • His personal firefighting duties and responsibilities
    • The site evacuation and personnel recording/checking procedure
    • The location(s) and type(s) of portable firefighting equipment available on site
    • The contact procedure for company emergency services in the event of a site fire
  • Participants will also be able to:
    • Describe the theory of combustion,
    • Take the correct actions when exiting a smoke filled environment and assist other staff to make their escape,
    • Operate portable firefighting equipment in offices,
    • Operate fixed firefighting equipment in offices,
    • Use fire blankets,
    • Conduct a pre-evacuation check of their office areas,
    • Secure their office areas prior to evacuation,
    • Report correctly to Headcount Supervisors,
    • Conduct/assist in accounting for personnel.
    • The course includes a written knowledge assessment.
    • Describe the role of the Fire/Emergency Response Team Leader,
    • Initiate servicing of equipment and replenish stocks,
    • Allocate and confirm the team's duties and tasks,
    • Monitor the team's progress, evaluating, adjusting and communicating the response plan,
    • Maintain communications during an incident,
    • Monitor stress in self and others,
    • Debrief the team. Describe the fire/emergency response arrangements at offshore locations and describe the role of the Fire/Emergency Response Team Member,
    • Describe the incident planning and monitoring activities,
    • Describe how fixed fire systems operate,
    • Prepare and enter an incident area,
    • Gain access to an incident area,
    • Locate missing personnel,
    • Handle and remove casualties,
    • Select and use portable firefighting equipment,
    • Select, operate and flush foam firefighting equipment,
    • Conduct and control breathing apparatus operations,
    • Minimize damage to property,
    • Maintain communications during an incident.
    • The course includes a practical assessment of competence covering all aspects of the Fire/Emergency Response Team Member role.

Examination

We have Examinations for each package in addition to practical assignments which you must pass before certification. Pass mark is 50%. If you fail any of the exams, you would be required to re-sit it at the cost N3,000 per paper. 

Fees And Program Responsibility

The course duration is 1 day. The course is delivered in our Full Multi-Media, Air-conditioned Training Laboratory. The course can also be delivered as an in-House Training Program in your premises. 

For in-house training, the minimum number of persons required per class is 6 persons, if you are training a class that is less than 6 persons, your payment may cover payment for 6 persons. We shall execute the program as presented in this schedule with our materials, equipment and instructors, and issue certificates to participants at the end of the program. 

If the training is holding at our Training Laboratory, we shall have tea and lunch breaks during the program. If you want the training to hold in your company premises, you are to provide the training hall and have tea and lunch breaks during the program. If the training location is outside our training centers, an additional cost to cover logistics at such a location will be added to the total cost unless provided or specific arrangement is made by the company.

The registration fee per person is N65,000 for Individuals N75,000 for companies. To register, click appropriately as required. Program Mode


Physical Classroom

Safeguard physical classroom study allows you to get away from the distractions from workplaces and homes to enable concentrate on your training until completion. Live Virtual Classroom

If you have the time for classroom study but you are not available to join our classroom session due to distance or location, then our Live Virtual Class is your best alternative. Our live virtual class is easy to follow and can be completed within the same time as the physical classroom. Learners can join remotely and learn ‘live’ online with a tutor just as they would in a classroom. You get all the benefits of structured classroom learning but with the convenience of the digital world, studying where you like. Our learners can remotely join the virtual class from any location in the world through live video conferencing with the Zoom Technology using a PC, laptop, tablet or a smart phone. Learners are advised to download and install the Zoom technology in their devices for this purpose and secure a reliable internet service in advance to enable access to the live virtual class. Throughout the course, learners can see and interact with the tutor and with other learners. Group interaction enhances learning; learners learn from one another as well as from the tutor. Our live virtual class provides practical, flexible and convenient ways of learning, designed to fit around you and your needs. Learners are able to drop questions on the chat box in group or private chat the Tutor and learners can also request to ask questions while the training is going on. Daily take-home assignment will be posted in chat box and on the group WhatsApp which will be reviewed by the tutor at the beginning of each day’s tutorial. There will be workbook and course workbook which will be completed by learners and submitted for tutor’s evaluation. A revision class and a mock examination will be arranged to prepare learners for the final examination.

Tutor-supported Distance Learning Program

Many people today do not want, or are not able, to spend days or weeks in a classroom. In view of this, our distance learning program provides an available alternative learning method. It is tutor-supported package which uses a variety of support mechanisms to ensure that you are fully engaged. It guarantees better understanding of the course contents and encourages group interaction with other learners using the WhatsApp platform which enhances learning. Without compromising on course quality the distance learning program is our most cost effective learning method when compared to physical classroom or live virtual classroom. Course materials consist of study notes and workbooks, coursework, brainstorming exercises, media resources and a course textbook. Learners are encouraged to complete the study workbook and coursework and submit to us for marking. At the end, your knowledge and understanding can be formally assessed using a mock examination to prepare learners for the final examination. The course fees covers course materials, exam-fees, tutor support and a distance-learning course license for a maximum of twelve months from the date of issue. Exam can also be attended online. Distant Learning will include a self-study of the course manual by the student. A tutor-based revision will be done with the student for preparation against examination via Zoom video conferencing. Corportate Classes

Organizations that are sponsoring learners to join our physical classroom, virtual classroom or distance learning program will have to pay the corporate course fees. We can also arrange an executive package for organizations that desire a top-class welfare package for their employees. We can visit your workplace and deliver the course at a time and place to suit you in the form of in-company training. This is an effective way of training several delegates at the same time, saving on time and travel costs. The biggest benefit of in-company training is the location. Organizing training off-site can be difficult for some employers, especially if you have a large team to get through a course. On-site training means less travel time and are much more convenient for your employees. Hosting a course, yourself also means last minute changes can be made to attendees. For example, if someone suddenly becomes free to complete some training, at least they will be in the right place already. You may want to do this so that lessons tie in with your own policies and procedures, or even just change the learning pace to suit your employee's schedules. The course fees cover: registration, examination fee, tuition, tutorial support and course materials (in addition to lunch break for physical classroom). After payment and registration, you will receive the complete course material ahead of the training.
