COURSE OVERVIEW

NEBOSH qualifications with high pass rate globally are provided by Safeguard, a NEBOSH Accredited Learning Partner 1332 with SILVER STATUS. You can join our NEBOSH International Oil and Gas Certificate Physical Classroom Training or preferably the Virtual Class from any location in the world. You can also write your invigilated exam in our office locations or at various exam locations globally. 

The International Oil and Gas Certificate is aimed primarily at managers, supervisors and health and safety advisers with safety responsibilities in the oil and gas industry. The qualification focuses on operational process safety and is intended to enable learners to apply and implement effective process safety management across all areas of their operation, anywhere in the world.

This qualification provides the underpinning knowledge, which when combined with experience enables holders to identify, evaluate and control a wide range of workplaces hazards. It is based around international standards and management systems that enable the effective discharge of workplace safety responsibilities both onshore and offshore. Globally, employers in the oil and gas industries find that the International Oil and Gas Certificate can improve the safety culture of their organization by providing line management and staff with a sound understanding of operational safety management.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

  • This qualification is for those working in the oil and gas (or related) industries, who need to gain a sound understanding of the principles of operational health and safety that apply in their specialist area.
  • For some, the International Oil and Gas Certificate can be an important step towards establishing a lifelong professional career in occupational health and safety. Some who take their International Oil and Gas Certificate progress on to one of our Diploma level qualifications.
  • NEBOSH strongly recommend that you should already have an underpinning knowledge of health and safety issues prior to taking the course equivalent to the NEBOSH International or National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

WHAT DOES THE COURSE COVER?

The NEBOSH Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety covers one main unit (IOG1) entitled ‘Management of international oil and gas operational safety’. 

The key topics covered by the qualification are: 

  • Hazards inherent in the extraction, storage and processing of raw materials and products
  • Hydrocarbon process safety
  • Risk management techniques used in the oil and gas industries.
  • Contractor management
  • Fire and explosion controls in the oil and gas industries
  • Marine and Land logistics

This unit is divided into the following five key elements: 

  • Health, safety, and environmental management in context
  • Hydrocarbon process safety (1)
  • Hydrocarbon process safety (2)
  • Fire protection and emergency response
  • Logistics and transport operations

EXAMINATIONS

Examination registration

Learners must be registered before they can take an examination. All examination registrations must be completed by Safeguard RTL as the accredited learning partner.

Examination entry confirmation

Once we have registered you to an examination, we will send you an Examination Entry Confirmation that includes your learner number, and important information relating to your examination and results process. Please ensure that you check your name is spelt correctly and report this to your us if any changes are required. The Examination Entry Confirmation is essential to gain entry to the examination room, you will need to show a form of photographic identification to the invigilator and then sign the Examination Entry Confirmation. 

Examination Format

PSM1: Online Proctored Multiple-Choice Question Exam.

 Exam dates will be decided and arranged by NEBOSH.

Examination Results

You will receive your results within 15 working days of sitting the examination. Once you have achieved a pass a qualification parchment will be issued.  This is normally within 20 working days of the confirmation of the successful unit.

NOTIONAL LEARNING HOURS

A break-down of the notional learning hours is given below:

PSM1: 28 hours tuition and 20 hours private study Total: 48 hours A programme of study therefore needs to be based around a minimum of 28 taught hours and approximately 20 hours of private study for an overall total of 48 hours.

A full-time block release course would be expected to last for a minimum of four working days and a part-time day release course would be spread over at least four weeks.

For candidates studying by open or distance learning, the tuition hours should be added to the recommended private study hours to give the minimum number of hours that this mode of study will require.

ASSESSMENTS

The Certificate in Process Safety Management is a one-unit qualification..

Unit PSM1: Process safety management.

  • Unit PSM1 is a taught unit, assessed by a 90-minute multiple-choice question paper.
  • The question paper consists of 40 multiple-choice questions; 10 of the questions are extended scenario questions which will be randomly distributed throughout the paper.
  • Each question is worth one mark and has one correct and three incorrect responses available.
  • The question paper covers the whole syllabus with at least one question per element and all questions are compulsory.

RE-SITTING UNIT(S)

You may re-sit a unit assessment if: 

  • you achieved a ‘Pass’ in a unit that is five or more years old and you need it to achieve the qualification;
  • you are ‘Referred’ (i.e. don’t pass); or
  • you want to retake a Unit to get a higher grade.

 There is no limit to the number of times you can re-sit unit(s) within the five-year period. Re-sit marks are not capped. If you want to try to improve your grade in a Unit, you need to tell Nebosh in writing within 20 working days of the declaration date of your successful unit.

Exemptions

You will not normally need to complete HSW1 if you hold the Award in Health, Safety and Environment in the Process Industries - mark achieved for Unit HSEP1.

Important information regarding exemptions:

  • Exemption for Unit HSEP1 is normally valid for 2 years from the declaration date.
  • The declaration date is the date printed on the unit certificate.
  • Exemption qualifying period - the examination date for the last unit of the new qualification must be within 2 years of the declaration date of the unit being used as an exemption.

ENROLMENT DURATION

You will have five years to complete your qualification. The five-year period starts from the date you passed your first successful unit (we call this the ‘declaration date’). Any unit that is five or more years old will not count towards the qualification and you will need to retake the unit(s) if you still want to complete the qualification.

Physical Classroom

  • Safeguard physical classroom study allows you to get away from the distractions from workplaces and homes to enable concentrate on your training until completion.
  • It provides learners a great opportunity to condense their study within the training the days compared to our Distance Learning Program which can be studied over a relatively longer period.
  • Learners also have the option to take the examination within the study period or any other convenient available examination date.
  • The classroom setting allows learners to learn in our safe, quiet, clean multi-media training laboratory, away from the noise and pressures of their work or their homes.
  • Again, learners could be large which allows the classroom environment to provide the important “human touch” that teaches learners how to interact physically with one another in a professional, productive and cooperative way which is often missing in distance learning program.

Live Virtual Classroom

  • If you have the time for classroom study but you are not available to join our classroom session due to distance or location, then our Live Virtual Class is your best alternative.

  • Learners are advised to download and install the Zoom application in their devices for this purpose and secure a reliable internet service in advance to enable access to the live virtual class.
  • Throughout the course, learners can see and interact with the tutor and with other learners. Group interaction enhances learning; learners learn from one another as well as from the tutor.
  • Our live virtual class provides practical, flexible and convenient ways of learning, designed to fit around you and your needs.
  • Learners are able to drop questions on the chat box in group or private chat the Tutor and learners can also request to ask questions while the training is going on.
  • Daily take-home assignment will be posted in chat box and on the group WhatsApp which will be reviewed by the tutor at the beginning of each day’s tutorial.
  • There will be workbook and course workbook which will be completed by learners and submitted for tutor’s evaluation.
  • A revision class and a mock examination will be arranged to prepare learners for the final examination.

  • Many people today do not want, or are not able, to spend days or weeks in a classroom. In view of this, our distance learning program provides an available alternative learning method.
  • It provides you with a flexible and easily accessible learning solution, you choose the time, place and pace of learning and take control of your learning program.
  • It is tutor-supported package which uses a variety of support mechanisms to ensure that you are fully engaged. It guarantees better understanding of the course contents and encourages group interaction with other learners using the WhatsApp platform which enhances learning.

  • Course materials consist of study notes and workbooks, coursework, brainstorming exercises, media resources and a course textbook.
